Late Tabu Ram Taid (1 August 1942 – 17 August 2019) was an eminent educationist, linguist, scholar, administrator, author, and one of the foremost pioneers in the preservation and promotion of the Mising language and culture. His lifelong contributions to education, language development, literature, and public service continue to inspire generations across Assam and beyond.
Birth and Early Life
Tabu Ram Taid was born on 1 August 1942 in Ghunasuti Ayengia, a geographically remote Mising village in the present-day Lakhimpur district of Assam.
His father, Ubbang Taid, was a humble farmer who supported a family of nine despite difficult economic circumstances. Encouraged by his father, Tabu Ram Taid pursued education with determination despite geographical isolation and financial hardship.

Civil Services Achievement
In 1970, he qualified through the UPSC examination for both the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Owing to medical reasons he could not join the services. He was the first tribal youth from Assam to achieve selection for these prestigious All India Services.
Professional Career
Tabu Ram Taid began his academic career in 1967 as a Lecturer in the Department of English at Cotton College. After fourteen years in teaching, he entered educational administration in 1981.

Passing Away
Late Tabu Ram Taid passed away on 17 August 2019 at the age of 77 in a private hospital in Guwahati. He was laid to rest with full state honours at his birthplace, Gogamukh.

Tabu Ram Taid remains one of the most respected figures in the cultural and intellectual history of the Mising community. His pioneering work in education, language development, literature, ethnology, and public service continues to inspire scholars, students, and future generations.
